Backing up your data with Synology Hyper Backup to our S3 compatible object storage is simple and secure. We will walk you through the steps to configure Hyper Backup to store encrypted backups directly in your e3 cloud storage bucket.
Before we begin, you will need the following:
Start a free eazyBackup e3 trial
Your S3 access key and secret key
The endpoint URL
The bucket name you’ll use for backups
Locate or install the Hyper Backup app on your Synology NAS
Start a free trial of the eazyBackup e3 object storage service.
Login to the eazyBackup Dashboard. From the eazyBackup menu, select e3 Object Storage -> Buckets.
Create a new bucket that will be used to store your backup data.
Choose the type of bucket for your backup, you can optionally enable Versioning or Object Locking on the new bucket. The use of Versioning is highly reccomended to help protect your backup agaist ransomeware threats.
Once you have created backup to store your backup data, open the Hyper Backup app on your Synology NAS.
When prompted to select the Backup Type, choose 'Folders and Packages'.
Next, select the destination for your backup. Scroll down and locate the 'S3 Storage' cloud service. Clck Next to continue.
Configure the backup destination with the following settings:
S3 Server: Custom Server URL
Server address: Enter the service address, you can find your service address on the 'Access Keys' page of our storage dashboard.
Signature Version: V4
Request Style: Path-Style
Access Key / Secret Key: Copy your Access key and Secret key from the 'Access Keys' page of our storage dashboard.
Bucket name: If you have correctly configured the server address and access keys, you should be able to click on the 'Bucket name' field to retreive a list of buckets from your storage account. Select the bucket name you created back in step 3.
Once all the fields are filled in, click Next to continue.
Select the data you would like included in your backup, click Next to continue when you are done.
Configure a schedule for your backup. Typically, you will want ot run your backup outside of normal business hours. Give the task a name and choose a time of day to start the backup. If you want to encrypt your backup data before it's transmitted your bucket, check the box to enable the 'Client-side- encryption.
Carefully read the notice regarding data encryption. Save your encryption key somewhere safe, you will not be able to restore your data without the encryption key.
Configure the retention settings for your backup. Enter the number of backup versions you would like to keep. If you selected a daily backup schedule, 30 versions will retain 30 days of backup jobs.
Set the number of versions to meet your retention needs.
Keep in mind that each backup version will consume a small amount of additional storage.
Click Next when you are done.
Review the summary of your new backup. Click 'Done' to save the backup job.
After your your first backup has completed, you can check that your e3 bucket contains the backup data. The files will be encrypted and you will not be able to verify individual files, but you check check the size and contents of the bucket.
From our Dashboard, visit the 'Bucket's page, here you will be able to view the size of the bucket.
Click the 'Browse' button to explore the contents of the bucket
