# Restored File Is Missing from the Windows Desktop

### Overview

An eazyBackup restore may report that a file was restored successfully, but the file does not appear on the Windows desktop.

A common cause is **Microsoft OneDrive Desktop backup**, sometimes called Desktop folder redirection. When this feature is enabled, the desktop displayed by Windows may be stored inside the user’s OneDrive folder rather than the traditional local Desktop folder.

For example, eazyBackup may restore the file to:

```
C:\Users\<username>\Desktop
```

However, Windows may be displaying the contents of:

```
C:\Users\<username>\OneDrive\Desktop
```

For Microsoft 365 business accounts, the Desktop may instead be located somewhere similar to:

```
C:\Users\<username>\OneDrive - <organization>\Desktop
```

The file was restored successfully, but it may have been placed in a different Desktop folder from the one currently displayed on the screen.

### Check the Local Desktop Folder

1. Open **File Explorer**.
2. Click the address bar at the top.
3. Enter the following path:

```
%USERPROFILE%\Desktop
```

4. Press **Enter**.
5. Look for the restored file.

This opens the traditional local Desktop folder, even when Windows is displaying a OneDrive-managed Desktop.

### Check the OneDrive Desktop Folder

In File Explorer, look for **OneDrive** in the navigation pane on the left.

Depending on the type of OneDrive account, it may appear as:

* OneDrive
* OneDrive – Personal
* OneDrive – Company Name
* OneDrive – Organization Name

Expand the OneDrive folder and open its **Desktop** folder.

You can also try entering this path into the File Explorer address bar:

```
%USERPROFILE%\OneDrive\Desktop
```

For a Microsoft 365 business account, the path may look similar to:

```
C:\Users\<username>\OneDrive - <organization>\Desktop
```

The exact OneDrive folder name can vary between computers and organizations.

### Find the Desktop Folder Windows Is Currently Using

The following PowerShell command shows the Desktop location assigned to the currently signed-in Windows user.

1. Right-click the **Start** button.
2. Select **Terminal** or **Windows PowerShell**.
3. Enter:

```powershell
[Environment]::GetFolderPath('Desktop')
```

4. Press **Enter**.

The command will return the full path of the Desktop that Windows is currently displaying.

For example:

```
C:\Users\jsmith\OneDrive - Example Company\Desktop
```

Compare this path with the restore destination shown in the eazyBackup restore log.

### Check if OneDrive Desktop Backup Is Enabled

Microsoft currently manages Desktop folder backup through the OneDrive **Sync and backup** settings.

To check the setting:

1. Locate the **OneDrive cloud icon** in the Windows notification area near the clock.
2. Select the OneDrive cloud icon.
3. Select the **Help & Settings** gear icon.
4. Select **Settings**.
5. Open **Sync and backup**.
6. Select **Manage backup**.
7. Check the status of the **Desktop** folder.

If Desktop backup is enabled, the Desktop shown by Windows is normally located inside the OneDrive folder. Files placed in this folder are synchronized through OneDrive and may appear on other devices signed in to the same account.

> **Important:** You do not need to disable OneDrive Desktop backup to locate or recover the restored file. Turning off this feature can move files or change where they are stored. Check both Desktop locations before changing any OneDrive settings.

### Move the Restored File to the Displayed Desktop

If the file is found in the traditional local Desktop folder:

```
C:\Users\<username>\Desktop
```

but Windows is using a OneDrive Desktop, copy or move the file into the Desktop path returned by the PowerShell command.

For example:

```
C:\Users\<username>\OneDrive - <organization>\Desktop
```

The file should then appear on the user’s visible desktop. OneDrive may also begin synchronizing it.

### Perform a Test Restore to a Separate Folder

To confirm that the restore itself is working, restore the file to a clearly identifiable folder instead of selecting Desktop.

For example:

```
C:\eazyBackup-Restore
```

Create the folder first if it does not already exist.

After the restore completes:

1. Open File Explorer.
2. Browse to `C:\eazyBackup-Restore`.
3. Confirm that the restored file is present.
4. Open the file to verify that it was restored correctly.

If the file appears in this location, the restore operation is working. The original issue is likely related to the selected destination, OneDrive Desktop redirection, or the Windows user account under which the restore was performed.

### Other Locations to Check

If the file is not in either Desktop folder, check the following:

#### Another Windows User’s Desktop

Confirm that the correct Windows username was selected in the restore destination.

Check:

```
C:\Users\
```

Look inside the Desktop folder for each relevant Windows user.

#### Public Desktop

Files placed in the Public Desktop may be visible to all users:

```
C:\Users\Public\Desktop
```

#### OneDrive on the Web

If the file was restored into the OneDrive Desktop folder and OneDrive completed synchronization, it may also be visible in the user’s OneDrive account online.

#### Windows Search

Open File Explorer, select **This PC**, and search for the exact restored filename.

Searching from This PC may take several minutes, but it can locate the file if it was restored to an unexpected folder.

### If the File Still Cannot Be Found

Collect the following information before contacting eazyBackup Support:

* The exact filename
* The date and time of the restore
* The Windows username
* The original file location
* The selected restore destination
* The path returned by:

```powershell
[Environment]::GetFolderPath('Desktop')
```

* A copy or screenshot of the restore log
* Whether OneDrive Desktop backup is enabled

This information will help eazyBackup Support determine the exact location used during the restore and whether Windows folder redirection affected the destination.
