# Restore Microsoft 365 Data from e3 Cloud Backup

e3 Cloud Backup allows you to restore protected Microsoft 365 data from a previous backup snapshot.

You can:

* Restore supported items to their original location
* Restore certain items, such as email, to another compatible user
* Download selected data as a compressed archive
* Recover an entire workload, folder, mailbox, site, or individual item

### Before you begin

* The Microsoft 365 backup job has completed successfully.
* The user account you are signed in with has permission to access the protected user and restore points.
* The destination Microsoft 365 tenant is active and connected when restoring data directly to Microsoft 365.

### 4. Choose the restore method

Select how you want to recover the data.

#### Restore to Microsoft 365 tenant

This option writes the selected mail, files, calendar items, and other supported data back to the connected Microsoft 365 tenant.

Existing matching items are skipped rather than overwritten.

#### Download as compressed archive

This option packages the selected items into a compressed `.zip` archive that you can download.

Nothing is written back to Microsoft 365 when this method is selected.

After choosing a restore method, select **Next**.

### 5. Browse and select the data

The **Browse & select** page displays the Microsoft 365 data available in the selected snapshot.

You can expand the inventory tree to browse protected workloads such as:

* Users and mailboxes
* Exchange mail folders and messages
* Calendars and calendar events
* OneDrive files and folders
* SharePoint sites
* SharePoint document libraries and lists
* Microsoft Teams data
* Other protected Microsoft 365 workloads

Use the arrows beside each workload to expand its contents. Select the checkbox beside an item to add it to the restore.

You can restore at different levels of granularity. For example, you can select:

* An entire user or mailbox
* An entire mail folder
* A single email message
* An entire OneDrive
* A folder or individual file
* An entire SharePoint site
* A document library, list, folder, or individual item
* An entire calendar or individual event

The **Selected for restore** panel shows everything currently included in the restore. Select **Remove** beside an item to remove it from the selection.

You can also use the search field to find an item within the backup inventory.

When your selection is complete, select **Next**.

### 6. Choose the destination

This step appears when restoring data directly to Microsoft 365.

#### Restore to original location

Select **Restore to original location** to return the selected data to the same user, mailbox, site, drive, or other location from which it was backed up.

The wizard displays the inferred original destination so that you can confirm where the data will be restored.

#### Restore to a different destination

For compatible data, select **Restore to a different destination** to restore the selected items to another user or location in the same Microsoft 365 tenant.

For example, selected email messages can be restored to another Microsoft 365 user.

1. Select **Restore to a different destination**.
2. Select the destination user or other compatible target.
3. Select **Next**.

Only destinations that are compatible with the selected data are shown.

### 7. Review and start the restore

Review the restore details before starting the operation.

The review page shows:

* The selected backup snapshot
* The number of selected items
* The restore destination
* How duplicate items will be handled

By default, existing mail, calendar events, files, and other items that match the backed-up data are skipped. Existing items are not overwritten.

Select **Start restore** to begin.

### 8. Monitor the restore

After the restore begins, the progress page displays information such as:

* Overall progress
* Workloads completed
* Current phase
* Processed data
* Uploaded data
* Elapsed time
* Individual workload status
* Any errors reported during the restore

Do not close the page until the restore has been accepted and started. You can return to the job log later to review its final status.

### Downloading a compressed archive

When **Download as compressed archive** is selected, e3 Cloud Backup gathers the selected data and builds a compressed archive.

The amount of time required depends on the number and size of the selected items.

When the archive is ready:

1. The restore status changes to **Archive ready**.
2. Select **Download archive**.
3. Save the compressed file to your computer.

The archive is stored temporarily and is automatically removed after the displayed retention period, typically seven days. Download it before the retention period expires.

### Important restore behaviour

#### Duplicate items

When restoring directly to Microsoft 365, matching existing items are skipped. The restore does not normally overwrite an existing matching email, calendar event, or file.

#### Destination compatibility

A different destination can only be selected when the target is compatible with the restored data. For example, mailbox data must be restored to a compatible Microsoft 365 user.

#### Granular recovery

You do not need to restore an entire Microsoft 365 account. You can browse the snapshot and recover only the required site, mailbox, folder, file, list item, calendar event, or email.

#### Archive retention

Downloadable archives are temporary. The archive-ready page displays the applicable retention period. After that period expires, the generated archive is automatically removed.
